Pharmacy Benefit Manager

Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) are essential in today’s healthcare environment. Gone are the days when a PBM was simply a third party administrator paying prescription claims.

In recent years employers and their consultants have grown to understand that PBM contracts can be complicated and have unintended consequences for pharmacists and employers. With that in mind EHC extended a Request for Proposal, (RFP) to PBMs.

In addition to excellent pricing, the RFP included specific requirements for transparency to employers. The RFP also required support of coalition quality initiatives, on site education to physicians about drug pricing and efficacy and participation in quarterly meetings with employers and their consultants to review utilization and assistance in evaluating opportunities to improve the overall performance of the plan. We were looking for partners, not vendors.

After extensive evaluation by a committee of EHC members and staff, two PBMs were chosen. Those PBMs are Catalyst and CVS/Caremark. While these two organizations met the requirements we had, they each have unique features that will meet the needs of every employer. EHC will gladly facilitate a meeting with one, or both of our PBMs for interested employers and consultants.
